History
Detroit Public Television (DPTV) began broadcasting in 1955 as WTVS Channel 56, a non-commercial, educational TV station licensed to the Detroit Educational Television Foundation. As a community licensee, DPTV now operates three broadcast channels - Analog Channel 56 and Digital 43.1 & 43.2. The digital service was launched in October 2000.
Detroit Public TV also manages 90.9 WRCJ-FM, a public radio station licensed to Detroit Public Schools.
Detroit Public Television is governed by a Board of Trustees led by Chairman Stephen Strome.  Daniel Alpert is the Station's Interim General Manager. The station employs about 100 people.
DPTV is the only public television station in the Detroit market and is regularly watched in some 1 million southeast Michigan households each week. Additionally, DPTV is available to 2.4 million homes throughout Canada via the Cancom satellite-to-cable.
