Our Families - Our Lives
cast The New Americans The Detroit area population is changing dramatically. Once the destination for Poles, Germans, Irish and other Europeans who came seeking jobs in the auto plants, the area has become far more cosmopolitan. The number of immigrants from the Middle East grew 56% in the last decade; the Latino population also grew by nearly 30%; and Asian Americans are usurping the role of the fastest growing minority. In 2000, 7.4% of the Detroit area population was foreign born.
In recognition of Metro Detroit's growing diversity, Detroit Public TV has created this web site to allow people of all cultures to share their stories and invite the community to their events, as well as provide extended information on two of our programs that explore diversity & immigration: American Family & The New Americans.
EMU Write-LinkWrite-Link Workshop 2005
As we did in 2003, Detroit Public Television collaborated with Eastern Michigan University to assist with their Write-Link Project. In this week-long workshop, area high school students gained practical experience from professionals in a variety of writing careers including journalism, public relations, technical communications and creative writing.
With the intergenerational theme of this year's workshop, for one of the sessions students were asked to interview seniors about their lives. Their stories are filled with memories of family and friends, as evident in this sampling of student writings.
