A Story of Healing
Winner of the 1997 Academy Award for Best Documentary - Short Subject, A Story of Healing tells of the journey of a team of American doctors and nurses to Vietnam as part of Interplast, Inc. Founded in 1969 by Donald R. Laub of Stanford University, Interplast sends teams of medical volunteers to developing countries to provide free reconstructive surgery to children. These volunteers treat children with congenital deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates, or those who have suffered crippling injuries, such as severe burns. In 1997, three plastic surgeons, four anesthesiologists, and five nurses made the trip to the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, where they changed the lives of 100 children forever. This 30-minute documentary is the record of their journey and the effect of the Interplast volunteers' work on the children they treat.
